Today, I’ll share how to “stack” offers to boost customers’ average order values.

The Brand: Beauty Bay

stroke 01

Beauty Bay is a retailer of over 10,000 products from the industry's favorite beauty brands, including skin care, hair care, and cosmetics.

If you visit one of its product pages, you will see three bonuses:

The first is a 20% discount if you download Beauty Bay’s app.

The second is a free felt tip liquid eyeliner when you spend 50€ on Beauty Bay.

The third is a 10% discount on selected items when you spend 70€.

When you click one of the links, Beauty Bay shows a slide-in popup that explains how to claim the offer.

There’s also a CTA for some offers, such as an invitation to download Beauty Bay’s mobile app:

Not a bad way to combine popups with upsells.

Why It Works

stroke 03

1. Think Multichannel for Communication.

Brands know that when a potential customer downloads an app, it’s another channel of communication to communicate through. If brands can incentivize downloads with the promise of an extra discount, it more than pays for itself.

2. Show Different Offers for Different Shoppers.

Not everyone is motivated by discounts. But the promise of a related physical item—something potential customers can visualize using in their everyday lives—is often enough to nudge a shopper to spend more to quality for.

3. Use a Third Offer as an “Anchor.”

An extra discount can mean a lot to shoppers on a budget, but including a third offer is likely a decoy to make the other two offers more tempting. Sometimes, a little psychology goes a long way.

That’s it.

Until next week.
