What a theme park and a seminar have in common

Sage Sunday

Hey there,

Happy Sunday.

It has been again a week of travels and variety.

Nadya and I headed off to Orlando. Whilst here, we took the opportunity to spend some time at the Universal Studios.

There, we walked under an archway with a line carved across the top of it:

"Beyond this gate find gardens green and epic worlds to fill your dreams."

Peter Sage
And it delivers. That place is one of the most thorough pieces of engineering I have ever walked through, which are designed for one purpose: to ensure that you feel elated from the moment you pass that gate. For a day, it works on everyone.

Then you fly home, the inbox is waiting, and by Monday the feeling has gone.

I have been thinking about that pattern for a long time, because I spent fifteen years training with Tony Robbins, and he taught me how to get a room on fire. What I noticed over those years, in myself as much as anyone, is that the fire does not always survive the week. You leave buzzing, the old pressure comes back, and your body goes straight back to what it knows. Nothing wrong with the fire. It is simply not the part that decides what lasts.

Motivation works on the surface. The state underneath decides whether anything lasts.

Two of the Universal Studio worlds Nadya and I spent the day in were Super Nintendo World, and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Two very different places, which carry a number of common themes.

The Star and The Patronus

Anyone who has ever played a Mario game knows the Super Star. You grab it, you flash gold, the music speeds up, and for a few seconds nothing can touch you. Then the music slows, the glow fades, and you are small again, standing exactly where you were, with the same obstacles in front of you.

The Star is the weekend seminar. The star is the day out at a theme park. That is most of what the personal development industry sells, and I say that as someone who has seen plenty of it.

The Star is real while it lasts. The trouble is that your body has a chemical baseline it has spent decades setting, and it defends that baseline the way it defends your temperature. Give it three days of adrenaline and it treats the new state like a fever. By Monday it has brought you back to normal, and normal is whatever you were before you bought the ticket. I call that cell inertia. The Star always wears off. The question is what you were building while it was on, and can you keep building it when it isn’t.

The other world Nadya and I visited at Universal Studios has the answer to that question. In the Harry Potter books the Dementors feed on unhappiness, and the only defence against them is a Patronus. You cannot cast it with willpower or a better wand. It only works if you hold a truly happy image in your mind and refuse to let go of it while the fear is in the room.

That shield is produced by inner state, not effort alone.

Your replies to the newsletter in these past two weeks have told me the same thing from the other side:

One of you wrote that a side project had swallowed the one daily task you had set for yourself to make authentic progress: that is the Star wearing off.

One of you spent a month in bed after a motorcycle accident, listened to the first five audios of Your Wish Is Your Command, and then emptied your calendar to make room for the rest: that is someone who has started building something real rather than chasing the next shiny thing, when the Star was not even on.

And there, ask yourself: what are you building when the Star is not on?

If you would like to learn how to cast the Patronus, and how to keep the Star alive once the music slows, that is exactly what I will be teaching in The Abundance Shift, a free, live, sixty minute masterclass on Wednesday 11 November at 5pm UK. The whole hour is about the state underneath: how to produce it on an ordinary morning with no Star in sight, and how to hold it when the glow would normally have worn off.

During the session, we will do a sixty-eight second exercise together, live, so you can feel the shift in your own body before the hour is out. That part only works in the room, which is why I am asking you to clear your calendar and be there.

Registering takes thirty seconds, and Kevin Trudeau’s
Your Wish Is Your Command, the ebook and the full audio, is yours for free the moment you do.

Stars also help you determine your course of travel. If your North Star has worn off and you are not sure which way to go next, I made a video this week for exactly that feeling.

The short version: you do not have a motivation problem, you have a direction problem, and that is one of the most solvable problems a person can have.

The long version is in the video below, it draws from the experience of a group of surfers in Hawaii, and it’s well worth the 11 minutes.

One More Thing

A few of you have asked the same question in the reply box lately:
how do I read the previous Sage Sundays? I love this question. It means you are not reading these as a Sunday treat, you are following a thread, and that is exactly the purpose with which they are written.

Email support@petersage.com and the team will send you what you have missed.

Back to that line over the gate:

Beyond this gate find gardens green and epic worlds to fill your dreams.

Universal built the gardens and the worlds, and they are magnificent. What nobody can build for you is the person who walks back out to the car park, and that person is the only thing you take home.

Have a beautiful Sunday.

All the best,
