$169,300. That’s a lot of money.

It's also how much I’ve spent on coaching.

These 12 coaches have ranged from copywriting to a personal philosopher to assisted psilocybin journeys.

They've made me a better entrepreneur, husband and dad.

And they’ve helped me find a deep sense of life satisfaction.

This week, on a solo episode of The Examined Life Podcast, I ask the question:

Do you need a coach?

My top 3 takeaways

Time is not created equal

Picture your Monday morning meeting. Now a boozy dinner with your best friends. Time feels different. And the ancient Greeks personified these feelings with two types of time: Kairos and Chronos.

How to find coaches

Instagram feeds you coaches promising you’ll “manifest your destiny.” Googling “coach” turns up endless lists of meticulously optimized (and well-marketed) “programs.” But the best way to avoid snake oil? Word-of-mouth.

When should you hire a coach?

Looking to learn a new skill? Don’t hire a coach right away. Get your hands dirty first, then find a coach to help you level up.

My favorite quote: Coaching is a journey, not a destination

The first coach said the furthest distance to travel is from your head to your heart. That opens a much bigger question: what does it mean to be in your heart? To live in your heart? To feel your heart? To be connected at the heart?

Why this episode matters to me

My coaching journey is a weird one.

I initially wanted a coach because “every other high-performer had one.”

Hey, you gotta meet people where they are!

Now, I plan on having a coach for the rest of my life.

Why?

Because life’s gonna happen.

And I’ll always need someone to help me navigate the stories swirling around my head.

That's my personal path to peace.
