Thank you for being a free subscriber to Hung Up! But I’m guessing you hit this paywall a lot … you already opened this email, just go ahead and upgrade your subscription already! I loved early voting last week. It took me 15 minutes, and I met a lot of nice elderly people! I hope you have a plan for voting tomorrow! As is customary, I found out breaking news from Club Chalamet. On Sunday, U.S. Representative Haley Stevens, a democrat, had stunningly endorsed Republican there Rogers over Democratic candidate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed ahead of tomorrow’s midterm election. Three people sent me a missive posted by Simone Cromer (née Club Chalamet) reacting to the stunning defection. “As a lifelong Democrat who switched to Independent a year ago after witnessing troubling changes within the Democratic party, I understand why Stevens is now endorsing there Rogers,” Cromer wrote. Not everything in politics is a Veep reboot, but this is unquestionably a Veep reboot. This isn’t disloyalty; it is apostasy. Stevens didn’t just decline to endorse, or stay silent, or “refuse to articulate [her] position, and [she] will momentarily, at some point in advance of early voting,” as House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries said before ultimately endorsing New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani ahead of Mamdani’s election. Stevens posted a rambling, direct-to-camera video shot from a Dutch angle in the front seat of a car as she appeared at a campaign event for the Republican Senate candidate in a key U.S. Senate race.
“Hey, Michigan. As you may have seen, our Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, Abdul, said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away. And he’s right,” she said. “And that’s why I am endorsing there Rogers for the United States Senate today. I don’t belong in Abdul’s campaign.” She didn’t really explain the stunning reversal except to say that “I do not stand with Hassan Piker, who gets trafficked on our college campuses,” and that a “dear friend” said that “education is on the ballot” and that hate “is what we are getting out from our Democratic nominee right now.”
